Garden Myths: What Holds Up for Your Crop

Gardening runs on advice that nobody ever checked. Pick what you're growing and we'll show you which claims about it are backed by evidence, which the authorities argue over, and which have been properly tested and found wrong.

“Grow a carrot fly resistant variety like Flyaway and you won't get carrot fly”

The varieties sold as resistant are less susceptible, not immune. Flyaway, Maestro, Resistafly and Sytan are less susceptible to carrot fly rather than fully resistant.

What to do: Grow them by all means, and we recommend Flyaway ourselves, but treat the variety as one layer rather than the answer. Combine it with covering the crop and with sowing and lifting at the right times.

In Scotland: Worth knowing before paying a premium for resistant seed: in the parts of Scotland where carrot fly is scarce, variety choice matters less than it does further south.

“You can't grow long root vegetables on heavy or stony soil”

What heavy, shallow or stony ground actually does is make long-rooted carrots fork and go misshapen. Short-rooted and stump-rooted types cope with the same soil. The problem was never the soil on its own, it was the mismatch between soil and variety.

What to do: Stop trying to grow long tapered carrots in difficult ground. Choose a short or stump-rooted type, or sow into a raised bed of finer soil. Deep sandy soil is what long straight roots need, and most of us do not have it.

In Scotland: This matters more here than almost anywhere: heavy clay is common across the Central Belt, and it is the single most common reason a Scottish carrot crop comes up forked.

“Dig sand or grit into heavy clay to break it up”

The quantities involved make this hopeless at garden scale. Meaningfully diluting a soil that is 40 per cent clay takes around 250kg of grit or gravel per square metre. A barrowload does nothing, and adding modest amounts can destabilise the structure and leave the ground harder to work than before you started.

What to do: Add bulky organic matter instead: manure or composted bark, dug in generously. Raise beds to lift roots above the wet, and consider not digging at all. Those three do what the sand was supposed to do, and they compound each year rather than needing repeating.

In Scotland: Heavy clay runs right through the Central Belt, so this is one of the most expensive mistakes a Scottish grower can make. Two tonnes of grit for a small bed is not a purchase anyone makes twice.

“You have to dig the ground over each year to keep the soil fertile”

Digging works against fertility rather than for it. Turning the ground releases soil nitrogen and damages the soil's biology. The structure that fungi, worms and roots build up over a season is undone every time the spade goes through it.

What to do: Leave the ground alone and feed it from the top. Spread compost or well-rotted manure on the surface and let the soil life pull it down. Dig only where you actually need to, such as lifting root crops or clearing perennial weeds.

In Scotland: There is a practical bonus here: undug ground carries weight better and warms marginally earlier in spring than freshly turned wet soil, which matters when the season is already short.

“A scatter of Epsom salts will green plants up and stop blossom end rot”

Epsom salts are magnesium sulfate, and they contain no calcium whatsoever, so they cannot address a calcium problem. Worse, magnesium and calcium compete for uptake, so adding magnesium can make blossom end rot more likely rather than less. Most garden soils hold plenty of magnesium already, and adding more unbalances what is there.

Our read Blossom end rot is not a soil shortage in the first place. It is about calcium reaching the fruit, which is governed by steady watering, so the fix is a watering can and a mulch rather than anything you buy.

What to do: Water consistently and mulch to hold that moisture steady. Use Epsom salts only if a soil test has actually shown a magnesium deficiency, which is uncommon.

“Peat-free compost doesn't grow plants as well as the peat stuff”

This was a fair complaint a decade ago and it has not aged well. Peat-free quality has greatly improved in recent years, and dedicated research has found some carnivorous plants grow better in peat-free mixes than in peat. What is true is that peat-free behaves differently: the watering and feeding requirements are not the same, because the ingredients have different physical and chemical properties from peat.

Our read Most bad experiences with peat-free are a watering problem rather than a compost problem. It dries differently, so the habits you built on peat will let you down for a season until you adjust.

What to do: Read the bag rather than assuming, since feeding and watering advice genuinely varies between mixes. Buy fresh: old stock breaks down and performs worse regardless of what it is made of. If one brand disappoints, try another rather than writing off the category.

In Scotland: This matters more here than almost anywhere in Britain. Scotland holds a great deal of the UK's peat, those peatlands are major carbon stores, and peat-based compost comes out of them. The performance excuse for buying peat no longer holds up.

“Plants do better in pots than in the ground”

A container limits how far roots can spread and cuts the plant off from the reservoir of moisture and nutrients that open ground provides, increasing the need for both watering and feeding. You are taking on work the soil would have done for free.

Our read Pots are a solution to a problem, not an upgrade: no ground, bad drainage, a crop that needs containing, or somewhere warm against a wall. Chosen for those reasons they are excellent. Chosen by default they make the job harder.

What to do: Use the ground where you have it. Where you do use pots, go bigger than feels necessary, expect to water far more often, and feed through the season because there is no soil reserve to draw on.

“Strong-smelling plants confuse pests and hide your crop”

This is the theory underneath half of every companion planting chart, and it is the wrong mechanism. Research at Wellesbourne, Britain's long-standing centre for brassica and carrot pest work, found that insects hunting a host land on green and avoid bare brown soil. Colour, size and shape decide where they settle. Artificial green plants, and even green paper releasing nothing at all, disrupt them as well as living companions do, and aromatic plants perform no better than bland ones.

What to do: Stop choosing companions by scent. If ground cover is what disrupts the pest, the useful question is whether something low and green grows between your rows, not whether it smells of anything.

“Watering in sunshine scorches the leaves”

Water droplets do not focus sunlight enough to burn foliage. Scorch on new plants comes from insufficient hardening off far more often.

What to do: Water whenever the plant needs it. Watering at ground level rather than over the leaves is still worth doing, but for disease and evaporation reasons, not for scorch.

In Scotland: Rarely the limiting factor here anyway, though it matters under cover, where watering habits drive humidity and therefore disease.

“Coffee grounds acidify your soil and feed your plants”

Grounds do contain nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium, so the feeding half is not baseless. The acidifying half is not: their effect on pH is very minor and temporary. Spread thick they cap the soil and block water and air, and residual caffeine can suppress root and shoot growth.

What to do: Put them in the compost bin rather than straight on the bed. If you actually need to change pH, that is a job for lime or sulphur guided by a soil test, not for coffee.

In Scotland: Most Scottish soils are naturally acidic already, so the acidifying claim solves a problem you probably do not have and may worsen one you do.

“Planting onions among your carrots keeps carrot fly away”

The theory is that onion scent masks the carrot smell guiding carrot fly to your row. Garden Organic tested it and got inconsistent results across trials. RHS repeats the claim in its companion planting feature, but its own carrot growing guide never mentions onions: there the advice is to cover the crop.

Our read When the body making a claim quietly leaves it out of its own growing guide for that crop, that tells you how much weight it really carries.

What to do: Cover the crop when you need protection. Sowing after mid-May dodges the first generation of carrot fly and lifting before late August dodges the second, and both have evidence behind them where the onion does not.

In Scotland: Carrot fly is patchy across Scotland, so in some gardens you will get away with no protection at all.

“Sow radishes with slow-germinating root crops to mark the rows and break the soil”

This is old allotment practice rather than a tested technique, and we found no trial examining it either way. Radishes do germinate much faster than carrots or parsnips, so the row-marking part is true by simple observation. The claim that they loosen the soil for the slower roots behind them is the part nobody has checked.

Our read Harmless and mildly useful as a row marker. We would not expect any soil-structure benefit worth the competition for water, and on the visual-landing evidence a second green crop in the row is more likely to confuse carrot fly than radish roots are to improve your soil.

What to do: Use it if you find it handy for seeing where you sowed. Pull the radishes promptly so they stop competing, and do not count on any effect underground.

“Carrot fly can't fly high, so a 60cm barrier around the bed will protect your crop”

Carrot fly adults genuinely are weak, low fliers, and barrier fencing is a real control rather than folklore. A 2016 trial compared five treatments: insect-proof netting, no barrier, a 60cm barrier, a 90cm barrier, and a 60cm barrier with an overhang.

What to do: A barrier does work, but if you are going to the trouble, cover the crop instead: the same research found a complete covering more effective. Rotate as well, since the flies emerge from pupae overwintering where carrots grew last year.

“Thinning your carrots brings carrot fly in”

Female carrot flies looking for somewhere to lay are drawn by the smell released when seedlings are pulled and the foliage is bruised. This is one of the few pieces of carrot fly folklore that holds up.

What to do: Sow thinly so you barely need to thin at all. If you must, do it on a still evening, pull rather than snap the tops, and take the thinnings well away from the bed instead of leaving them on the soil.

“Manure makes root vegetables fork”

Fresh organic matter dug in immediately before sowing does cause carrots and parsnips to branch and fork. It is the timing that matters, not the manure itself.

What to do: Manure the bed the season before, not the spring you sow into it. Well-rotted material worked in the previous year is what you want.

In Scotland: Heavy Central Belt clay already forks long roots on its own. Adding fresh manure in spring gives you a second cause of the same problem, on ground that was working against you to begin with.

“Letting roots dry out then watering heavily makes them split”

An erratic water supply is the main cause of splitting. After a dry spell the roots take up water fast and surge in growth their structure cannot cope with. Excess nitrogen and frost contribute, and a virus spread by willow-carrot aphid can split roots open entirely.

What to do: Aim for steady moisture rather than rescue watering. In a long dry spell give a proper soaking every fortnight instead of frequent light watering, and build the soil's water-holding capacity with well-rotted organic matter over time.

In Scotland: Our problem is usually the reverse of England's: a wet spell after a dry one is the classic Scottish splitting trigger, and there is not much to be done about the rain except keep the soil evenly moist beforehand.

“Mulching is worth the effort”

This one earns its reputation. A layer of organic mulch conserves moisture, keeps the surface from cracking, suppresses weed germination by keeping light off the soil, and feeds the ground as it breaks down. It is worth doing directly for heavy soils, where it does more good than the grit people usually reach for.

What to do: Mulch onto ground that is already moist, not baked dry, or you seal the dryness in. Keep it clear of stems, and use compost, well-rotted manure or composted bark rather than anything that has not broken down.

In Scotland: Our rainfall means moisture retention matters less here than it does south, so the weed suppression and the slow feeding are the real prizes. On heavy ground a surface mulch also spares you digging wet soil, which does more harm than the weeds would.

“Growing flowers among your vegetables brings in insects that eat the pests”

Hoverflies and lacewings eat aphids as larvae but live on nectar and pollen as adults, so a plot with nothing in flower starves the insects doing your pest control. UC IPM is clear that this works and equally clear about its limits: the benefit falls away with distance from the flowers, and it will not always show up as fewer pests.

Our read This is the one piece of companion-planting folklore that survives, and it survives because it works by feeding predators rather than by confusing pests with smells. Note what it is not: a guarantee, or a replacement for mesh where a pest is serious.

What to do: Put the flowers among the vegetables rather than in a border at the far end of the plot, since the effect is local. Aim for something in flower across the whole season rather than one big flush.

What the four verdicts mean

The distinction that matters most is between a claim nobody has ever checked and one that was checked and failed. Most gardening advice sites collapse those into a single confident answer. We don't, because they are different claims and the difference changes how much weight you should give them.

Tested and false means somebody ran the experiment and the practice did not work. That is a strong claim and we only make it where there is evidence of failure, never where evidence is simply missing. Sources disagree means reputable authorities contradict each other or trials came out inconsistent, so you get every position rather than a tidy verdict we cannot support. Never tested means the claim is widely repeated but we found no study either way, so you get our reasoning openly labelled as ours rather than dressed up as evidence. Evidence supports it is the plain case, though it often carries a condition worth reading, as marigolds and whitefly do.

Where a crop has more claims than we can usefully show, the list is trimmed to the twenty most useful, and the busted and disputed ones are always kept ahead of the confirmations.

Why Scotland changes some of the answers

A fair amount of gardening advice is written for southern England or imported wholesale from America, and some of it inverts by the time it reaches a Scottish garden.

Coffee grounds are the clearest example. The claim is that they acidify your soil, which is offered as a benefit. Most Scottish soils are naturally acidic already, so even if the claim were true it would be solving a problem you do not have and worsening one you might. Carrot fly is patchy here, which changes how much a resistant variety is worth paying for. Our summers are cool and wet, so splitting is usually triggered by rain after a dry spell rather than by forgetting to water. And because most Scottish tomatoes grow under cover, glasshouse research applies here far more directly than it does further south.

Where a claim's answer shifts north of the border, the card says so. Where it makes no difference, we leave it alone rather than manufacture a Scottish angle.
